Let k be a global field and let \(G=GL_ 3\). In this paper an integral representation is given for the global L-function L(s,\(\pi\),Sym 2) where \(\pi\) is a cuspidal representation of \(G_{{\mathbb{A}}}\) and Sym 2 denotes the symmetric square representation of the L-group \(GL_ 3({\mathbb{C}})\) of G. This integral representation is analogous to the one given by Shimura in the case of \(GL_ 2\) and is of the form of a Rankin-Selberg integral of an automorphic form of \(\pi\) with a `theta-function' on the double cover of \(G_{{\mathbb{A}}}\). This `theta-function' cannot be constructed by means of the Weil representation; its existence is a consequence of the general theory of metaplectic groups. The special feature which is used here to convert the Rankin-Selberg integral into an Euler product is that the representation corresponding to the `theta-function' has no Whittaker models.''
