Let A, B be essentially selfadjoint and positive definite differential operators defined in \(L_ 2(G)\). Using Svirskij's construction of the base operator and some results from analytic perturbation theory of linear operators a formula providing eigenvalue lower bounds of the problem \(Au=\lambda Bu\) is derived. In this formula a rough lower bound of some higher eigenvalue and the residual convergence of the Rayleigh- Ritz eigenfunction approximations are needed. Since the accuracy of the developed formula depends crucially on the residual convergence of the Rayleigh-Ritz eigenfunction approximations, the effective use of this formula may be expected in solving the problems with smooth eigenfunctions. However, using some special treatment of eigenfunction singularities, good accuracy of the corresponding lower bounds may be obtained also in the problems with nonsmooth solution. In the remaining examples local singularities of eigenfunctions of ordinary differential operators with discontinuous coefficient and the square clamped plate are successfully handled using an augmented B-spline approximation. Thus engineers and scientists are provided the possibility to utilize their theoretical knowledge, intuition, and practical experience in order to obtain both upper and lower bounds of eigenvalues using only their favourite Rayleigh-Ritz method.
