It had been previously suggested by the first author [Phys. Lett. 119 B, 100-104 (1982)] that the quantization of the theory of relativistic closed bosonic strings is tantamount to the construction of unitary positive energy representations of the commutator algebra formed by the infinitesimal generators of all pertinent symmetries. As the first step toward this construction, the corresponding classical Poisson algebra is analyzed. An infinite dimensional abelian subalgebra of the latter is identified and its maximality property is established.
