Generalized classes of splines are defined with fixed knots and throughout the paper this splines satisfy a certain interlacing property connected with the solvability of interpolation. The paper deals with the approximation in uniform and \(L_ 1\)-norms, i.e. existence, characterization, uniqueness, strong uniqueness. Uniform approximation is discussed with a class of splines called Chebyshevian splines as well as approximation in the \(L_ 1\)-norm with some applications to the moment problem. The paper is concluded with remarks and numerous references.
