The abstract linear integrodifferential equation \[ u'(t)=Au(t)+\int^{t}_{-\infty}K(t-s)u(s)ds+f(t),\quad t\in R, \] is considered on a Banach space when A generates an analytic semigroup. Under certain assumptions on the kernel K and the generalized spectrum of the homogeneous equation, the existence and regularity of solutions bounded or exponentially bounded on R is proved when f has corresponding properties. A Fredholm-like alternative is also obtained for the case of periodic solutions when f is periodic. The spectrum of the special case when \(K(t)=k(t)A\) is studied in detail, particularly when k(t) is monotonic.
