\textit{B. Nath} [Math. J. Okayama Univ. 15, 1-6 (1971/2; Zbl 0238.46018)] modified \textit{G. Lumer}'s notion of a semi-inner-product [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 100, 29-43 (1961; Zbl 0102.327)] to the definition of a generalized semi-inner product on a complex Banach space X, which is a strictly positive 2-form, linear in the first component, satisfying a Hölder inequality for some p \((1<p<\infty)\) and which generates the norm. If the Banach space is reflexive and has a smooth, strictly convex unit sphere, for any bounded linear operator T on X a (not necessarily linear) adjoint operator can be defined. In this setting the notion of generalized normal and generalized hyponormal operators is introduced, and it is shown that some properties of normal and hyponormal operators in Hilbert space carry over, especially properties concerning the numerical range and the spectral radius r(T) such as \(r(T)=\| T\|\) and \(\| (T-\lambda I)^{-1}\| =(dist(\lambda,\sigma (T)))^{-1}\).
