    Let (W,S) be a finite Coxeter system, t an indeterminate and \(q=t^ 2\). Let H(W,t) be a generic Hecke algebra, i.e., H(W,t) is a free \({\mathbb{C}}[t]\)-module with a basis \(\{T(w)\}_{w\in W}\) and multiplication is given by \((T(s)+1)(T(s)-q)=0\), if \(s\in S\), and \(T(w)T(w')=T(ww')\), if \(l(w)+l(w')=l(ww')\), where l is the length function. Here \({\mathbb{C}}\) denotes the field of complex numbers. Let \(\alpha\) be a complex number, \(\phi _{\alpha}: {\mathbb{C}}[t]\to {\mathbb{C}}\) the \({\mathbb{C}}\)-algebra homomorphism defined by \(\phi _{\alpha}(t)=\alpha\), and \(H(W,\alpha)=H(W,t)\otimes _{{\mathbb{C}}[t]}({\mathbb{C}},\phi _{\alpha})\). Let \(w_ 0\) be the longest element of W, \(N=l(w_ 0)\), and \(G(q)=q^ N\sum _{w\in W}q^{l(w)}\). Then it is proved by elementary methods that (i) the \({\mathbb{C}}(t)\)-algebra H(W,t)\(\otimes {\mathbb{C}}(t)\) is semisimple, (ii) if W is not of type \(A_ 1\times...\times A_ 1\), then the \({\mathbb{C}}\)-algebra H(W,\(\alpha)\) is semisimple if and only if \(G(\alpha ^ 2)\neq 0\), and that (iii) if W is of type \(A_ 1\times...\times A_ 1\), then H(W,\(\alpha)\) is semisimple if and only if \(\alpha ^ 2\neq -1\).
