The main objective of the author is to derive the conditions under which the nonlinear boundary value problem \(-u''=\lambda u| u|^{p-1}\) for \(0<x<1\), \(u(0)=a\), \(u(1)=b\), where \(\lambda\), a, b and \(p>0\) are fixed real constants, has non-trivial solutions. The attention is especially paid to the uniqueness, non-negativeness as well as the positivity and monotonicity of the solutions. The solutions considered in the paper are in the classical sense (not in the sense of distributions). However, this is not a restriction since, as already known, any weak solution of this problem is necessarily a classical solution. The main results are given in the form of eight theorems (or propositions) which are based on eleven lemmas. The existence results are also illustrated and clarified via some diagrams (bifurcation diagrams). In the course of the text the already known existence results are reviewed in some detail.
