A class of generalized splines is introduced. These retain most of the features of the polynomial B-splines including an interpolation property and a construction of a weak Descartes basis by a recurrence formula. Class of splines under discussion contains the space of polynomial splines as well as other classes of splines investigated earlier by the authors together with \textit{G. Nürnberger} and \textit{L. L. Schumaker} [Numer. Math. 42, 115-212 (1983; Zbl 0528.41006), SIAM J. Math. Anal. 15, 790-804 (1984; Zbl 0571.41007)].
