A more elementary proof than that of \textit{T. Y. Li} and \textit{T. Sauer} [ibid. 91, 65-74 (1987; Zbl 0621.65028)] is given for the existence of homotopy curves for the eigenvalue problem for a general matrix. A corresponding result for \(Ax=\mu Bx\) is stated and the proof sketched. Advantages of the homotopy method are discussed.
