There is no guarantee that a finite-dimensional controller, designed for a reduced-order model, can always produce closed-loop exponential stability with a given distributed parameter system. The author proves tha exponential closed-loop stability can always be achieved by the addition of a residual mode filter of sufficiently large dimension, as long as the original distributed parameter system is stabilized and detectable. He presents a very straightforward and intuitively pleasing proof. The result separates the controller into two independent parts: (a) a feedback controller which stabilizes the finite number of unstable modes and (b) a residual mode filter which counteracts observation spillover.
