Sei \(A\in {\mathbb{C}}_{n\times n}\). In einigen Vorarbeiten haben R. L. Causey und der Autor ein paralleles Studium der Probleme \((*)\quad \min \| A-Z\| _ E;\quad ZZ^ *-Z^ *Z=0;\quad Z\in {\mathbb{C}}_{n\times n}\) und \((**)\quad \max \| Diag UAU^ *\| _ E;\quad UU^ *=E;\quad U\in {\mathbb{C}}_{n\times n}\) eingeleitet. Ein Stationärpunkt Z im Problem der besten normalen Approximation (*) erfüllt, mit geeignet bestimmten H, die Bedingung \(A=Z+ZH-HZ;\quad H^ *=H.\) Es werden verschiedene auf H und Z bezügliche implizite und explizite Bedingungen dafür hergeleitet, daß \(B=Z\) ein globales Extremum liefert. Sei \(\rho(H,B)=\min _{X}\rho (H-X);\quad XB=BX;\quad X^ *=X,\) wobei \(\rho (A)=\| A\| _ H\) die Hilbert-Norm bezeichne. Die Bedingung \(\rho\) (H,B)\(\leq 1\) ist ein hinreichendes Kriterium für die beste normale Approximation in der Euklidischen Norm. Für \(n=2\) wird das Problem vollständig behandelt; Formeln für die beste normale Approximation sowie für die Abweichung von der Normalität werden angegeben.
