    Let \(n>2\) be an integer and, for a prime number p, let \(\Phi_ p: SL_ n({\mathbb{Z}})\to SL_ n(p)\) denote the canonical homomorphism. The author proves that there is a proper subgroup \(H_ n\) of \(SL_ n({\mathbb{Z}})\) such that (i) \(H_ n\) is generated by n transvections, (ii) \(H_ n\) is free of degree n, (iii) \(H_ n\) is of infinite index in \(SL_ n({\mathbb{Z}})\), and (iv) \(\Phi_ p(H)=SL_ n(p)\) for every prime number p.
