Let G be a real Lie group and \({\mathfrak g}\) its Lie algebra. Let \({\mathfrak g}^*\) be the dual space of \({\mathfrak g}\) and \(f\in {\mathfrak g}^*\). Let G(f) be the stabilizer of f in G and \({\mathfrak g}(f)\) its Lie algebra. A positive total polarization for f is a subalgebra \(\rho\subset {\mathfrak g}_{{\mathbb{C}}}\) which possesses the following properties: (1) \(f([X,Y])=0\) for X,Y\(\in \rho\) (f assumed to be extended to \({\mathfrak G}_{{\mathbb{C}}})\); (2) \(\dim_{{\mathbb{C}}} \rho =(\dim {\mathfrak G}+\dim {\mathfrak G}(f))/2\); (3) (Ad g)\({}_{{\mathbb{C}}}(\rho)=\rho\) for \(g\in G(f)\); (4) \(\rho +{\bar \rho}={\mathfrak G}_{{\mathbb{C}}}\); (5) The bilinear form if([X,Y]) on \(\rho\) is Hermitian positive definite with kernel \(\rho\cap {\bar \rho}\) (here \(i\in {\mathbb{C}}\), \(i^ 2=-1\) and the bar denotes complex conjugation). The author investigates the group P of all automorphisms of G stabilizing f and \(\rho\). The main result of the article under review is the following Theorem: If G contains no ideal I with \(f(I)=0\) then the natural homomorphism \(\xi\) of P into End \({\mathfrak g}/{\mathfrak g}(f)\) is a topological isomorphism with some compact subgroup.
