Let (\(\Omega\),\(\Sigma\),\(\mu)\) be a space with finite positive measure, \(L^ 0(\mu)\) the space of all \(\mu\)-measurable functions on \(\Omega\), and \(A\subset L^ 0(\mu)\). We say that the set A of functions on \(\Omega\) is \(\mu\)-precompact if every sequence \(\{f_ n\}\) of elements in A contains a subsequence \(\{f_{n_ k}\}\) such that there exists a countable collection of sets \(\Omega_ j\in \Sigma\) \((j=1,2,...)\) satisfying \(\mu (\Omega \setminus \cup \Omega_ j)=0\) and on each \(\Omega_ j\) the sequence \(\{F_{n_ k}\}\) converges uniformly to some measurable function. Grothendieck introduced the notion of equimeasurability for sets of functions on compact spaces with Radon measures. The following definition generalizes the corresponding definition of Grothendieck [if \(\Omega\) is compact and \(\mu \in C^*_+(\Omega)\), both definitions coincide]. A set A of functions on \(\Omega\) is called equimeasurable if there exists a countable collection of sets \(\Omega_ j\in \Sigma\) \((j=1,2,...)\) such that \(\mu (\Omega \setminus \cup \Omega_ j)=0\) and every sequence \(\{f_ n\}\) of elements in A contains a subsequence \(\{f_{n_ k}\}\) which converges in \(L^{\infty}(\mu | \Omega_ j)\) for each \(j=1,2,..\). It is obvious that every equimeasurable set of functions is \(\mu\)-precompact; the converse is easily seen to be false. The purpose of this note is to give in terms of the above sets of functions a number of characteristics of the following two classes of linear operators. Let X, Y be Banach spaces, \(T\in L(X,Y)\) a bounded linear map from X into Y. We say that T belongs to class \(RN^ D\) [equivalently, \(T^*\) belongs to the class RN, cf. the author, Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR 200, 528-531 (1975; Zbl 0317.47022)] if for every space \(L^ 1(\mu)\) and every operator \(U\in L(L^ 1(\mu),Y^*)\), the map \(T^*U\) factors through some space \(\ell^ 1(\Gamma)\). The operator T is said to be conditionally weakly compact if it takes bounded sets into conditionally weakly compact sets, i.e., if every bounded sequence of elements of X contains a subsequence whose image converges weakly in itself in the space Y.
