The authors continue their investigations of infinite divisibility of probability measures on hypergroups [the first author, Lect. Notes Math. 928, 1-15 (1982; Zbl 0503.60014); the authors, Rend. Mat. Appl., VII Ser. 2, 315-334 (1982; Zbl 0501.60016) and ibid. 2, 547-563 (1982; Zbl 0507.60004)]. The continuity of symmetric convolution semigroups is considered. The goal is to show that under certain additional conditions on the underlying hypergroup K any symmetric convolution semigroup of probability measures is a continuous convolution semigroup ({\S} 3, Theorem 6). In order to prove this result the authors start with investigations of shift-compactness, which are of independent interest. In {\S} 4, examples of classes of hypergroups (called (commutative) hypergroups of type C I, resp. C II, resp. hypergroups with property S) for which the main result holds, are studied.
