The strategy adopted by the authors is based on the study of the relation between information and certainty unlike the ``classical'' approach in information theory which relates information and uncertainty. In a previous paper [ibid. 32, 187-215 (1984; Zbl 0553.94005)] three generalized classes of information measures were introduced. The present paper aims at extending these information measures to the bivariate case. Conditional and joint certainty measures are first introduced and their algebraic and analytic properties are investigated. Finally, the bivariate information measures are introduced and studied. It is important to underline the unifying character of the authors' approach as already known information measures can be obtained as particular cases of the new introduced ones. I believe the framework created by the original approach and the results of the authors lead to a benefical perspective to the analysis of the relationships between interacting systems.
