In quite a recent paper [Arch. Math. 48, 10-14 (1987; Zbl 0595.20027)], \textit{P. B. Kleidman} and \textit{R. A. Wilson} have shown that if G is an infinite simple locally finite group in which every proper subgroup is almost locally soluble, then \(G\cong PSL(2,K)\) or Sz(K) for some infinite locally finite field K. Now several authors have studied minimal non-X groups, that is groups which do not belong to some given class X, while every proper subgroup does belong to X. In several situations, locally finite minimal non-X groups enter the picture, and the Kleidman-Wilson theorem allows one to say that a simple locally finite minimal non-X group, if any exist, must be a PSL(2,K) or an Sz(K). This explains the relevance of the main theorem of this paper, which says that these groups are not minimal non-X, for certain X. Theorem: Let K be an infinite locally finite field, and C be one of the following classes of groups: (i) groups with Chernikov classes, (ii) Chernikov-by-hypocentral groups, (iii) hypercentral-by-Chernikov groups. Then PSL(2,K) and Sz(K) are not minimal non-C-groups.
