The author proves the following theorem of Phragmén-Lindelöf type, which is of interest when the boundary of the domain is sparse near \(\infty\). We write \[ M_ D(r,f)=\sup \{| f(z)|:z\in D,| z| =r\}. \] Suppose that D is an unbounded plane domain for which \(\infty\) is not an isolated boundary point. Suppose that \(\limsup_{z\to b}| f(z)| \leq 1\) for any finite boundary point b and that \[ \liminf_{r\to \infty}\log M_ D(r,f)/\log r<\infty. \] Then \(| f(z)| \leq 1\) in D. The theorem is shown to be sharp by construction of examples. This theorem is then used to prove the following ``universal'' Phragmén-Lindelöf theorem conjectured by Newman. Suppose f is analytic on an arbitrary unbounded domain D, and continuous on \(\bar D.\) If \(| f(z)| \leq 1\) on \(\partial D\) and \(f(z)=o(| z|)\) at \(\infty\), then \(| f(z)| \leq 1\) on D. The two results had been obtained earlier by \textit{W. H. J. Fuchs} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 267, 285- 293 (1981; Zbl 0472.30025)].
