This interesting volume is in part the proceedings of a workshop organized by the Institute for Mathematics and Its Applications, Minneapolis, Minnesota, under the program on ``Continuum physics and partial differential equations''. It is worth-while to mention the following papers: \textit{R. B. Bird}, ``Mathematical problems in the kinetic theory of polymeric fluids'', \textit{B. Caswell}, ``Lagrangian concepts for the numerical analysis of viscoelastic flow'', \textit{C. M. Dafermos}, ``Solution with shocks for conservation laws with memory'', \textit{D. D. Joseph}, ``Hyperbolic dynamics in the flow of elastic liquids'', \textit{E. A. Kearsley}, ``Rubbery liquids in theory and experiment'', \textit{M. Marcus} and \textit{V. J. Mizel}, ``Dynamical behavior under random perturbation of materials with selective recall'', \textit{J. A. Nohel} and \textit{M. J. Renardy} ``Development of singularities in nonlinear viscoelasticity'', \textit{Y. Rabin}, ``Macromolecules in elongational flows: metastability and hysteresis'', \textit{M. J. Renardy} and \textit{W. J. Hrusa}, ``Propagation of discontinuities in linear viscoelasticity'', \textit{R. P. Wool}, ``Strength and entanglement development at amorphous polymer interfaces''. The above titles represent an unusual variety of problems and approaches resulting from the variety of researchers participating in the workshops and preparing the papers. There is, however, one common feature characteristic for the whole book: some mathematical problems connected either with proper formulation of the corresponding equations or with their satisfactory solutions. The sources of the above equations are also of different nature. They arise, e.g. from a structural approach to the theory of polymeric fluids, from a phenomenological description of nonlinear viscoelastic fluids as well as from a purely numerical analysis. The book may be very useful for many research workers from laboratory, industrial and academic environments.
