The author continues his work on the multiplicativity of operator and matrix norms [see ibid. 73, 123-131 (1986; Zbl 0588.15014)] and his joint paper with \textit{E. G. Strauss} [ibid. 52, 351-360 (1983; Zbl 0516.15025)]. Now the case of rectangular matrices is treated. The interested reader may learn in observation 2.2 that the multiplicativity factor \(\mu\) is the best (least) possible if the inequality \(N_ 1(AB)\leq \mu N_ 2(A)N_ 3(B)\) is sharp, with means that equality holds for some nonzero matrices A and B.
