Relations between the solutions of the Sylvester-Lyapunov equation arising in stability problems of time-dependent linear systems and its discrete counterpart resulting from - not necessarily equidistant - sampling of the continuous-time system are given. These results are used to construct Lyapunov functions for a sampled-data system from Lyapunov functions for the continuous system and vice versa. Further, relations between the stability properties of the equilibrium of the continuous system and those of the equilibrium of its discrete counterpart are established.
