    Following a suggestion of \textit{J. Goodisman} [Phys. Rev. A 1, 1574-1576 (1970)], we substitute the integral \(\int \rho^{5/3} dx\) by \(\int f_ z\cdot \rho^{5/3} dx\) in the Thomas-Fermi-von Weizsäcker energy functional. The functions \(f_ z\), depending on the nuclear charge z, are cut-off functions. By \(E_{k\cdot z}^{TFWG}(z)\) we denote the modified, by \(E_{k\cdot z}^{TFW}(z)\) the unmodified TFW energy and \(k\cdot z\) is the number of electrons. Then we establish conditions for the functions \(f_ z\) such that \[ E_{k\cdot z}^{TFWG}(z)=E_{k\cdot z}^{TFW}(z)+D\cdot z\quad 2+o(z\quad 2)\quad (z\to \infty) \] and determine D. If \(k=1\) and \(E_ z\) Q(z) denotes the exact quantum mechanical groundstate energy then, using recent results of \textit{W. Hughes} [Ph. D. thesis, Princeton (1986)] and \textit{H. Siedentop} and \textit{R. Weikard} [Commun. Math. Phys. 112, 471-490 (1987)], proving Scott's conjecture [Philos. Mag. 43, 859-867 (1952)], we obtain for some special functions \(f_ z:\) \(E_ z\) \(Q(z)=E_ z^{TFWG}(z)+o(z\) 2) (z\(\to \infty)\).
