The paper deals with the derivation of embedded Runge-Kutta formulae of orders p(p-1), up to \(p=5\), with a continuous extension which is of order p everywhere. The minimum number of extra derivative evaluations required for the extension is established for \(p\leq 4\). The method of order 5 requires 6 evaluations, one extra for the error estimate and a further two for the continuous extension.
