In 1936, R. Baer proposed the problem of characterizing all (abelian) groups B (now called Baer groups) such that Ext\({}\) \(1_ Z(B;T)=0\) for all torsion groups T. He proved that such a group had to be torsionfree, and moreover, free whenever it was countable. The study of Baer modules over arbitrary domains R has been initiated by \textit{I. Kaplansky} [Arch. Math. 13, 341-343 (1962; Zbl 0108.263)]: an R-module B is called a Baer module if \(Ext\) \(1_ R(B;T)=0\) for all torsion R-modules T. He proved that Baer modules had to be flat and of projective dimension one. These results are the starting point of these discussions which aims at a full characterization of Baer modules over arbitrary valuation domains. It is proved that over such domains all Baer modules are free.
