    Let \(p_{nk}(x)=\binom{n}{k}x^ k (1-x)^{n-k}\), \(I=[0,1]\), \(K(n,t,x)=(n+1)\sum^{n}_{k=0}p_{nk}(x)p_{nk}(t).\) The author considers the approximation operators \(M_ n: L_ 1(I)\to C(I),\) \(n=1,2,...\), defined by \((M_ nf)(x)=\int^{1}_{0}K(n,t,x)f(t)dt,\) \(x\in I\). The aim of the pape is to put in evidence the saturation class for the \(L_ p\)-norms, \(1\leq p<\infty\), of these operators \(M_ n\). If \(h(0)=h(1)=0\) is such that \(h'\in L_ p(I)\) for \(1\leq p\leq \infty\), \(h\in BV(I)\) for \(p=1\), then denote by \(S_ p\) the set of all functions f: \(I\to R\) which admit the representation \(f(x)= k+\int^{x}_{a}(h(t)/t(1-t))dt\) a.e. on I, \(a\in (0,1)\). The main result is the following: ``Let \(f\in L_ p(I)\), \(1\leq p<\infty\). Then \(\| f-M_ nf\|_ p=O(1/(n+1)),\) if and only if \(f\in S_ p.''\)
