Approximate-factorization (AF) schemes have been used for numerical solutions of elliptic partial differential equations, mainly in two dimensions. A new two-factor scheme is proposed for 3D problems. This new method may be optimized and gives rapid convergence for all problems so far investigated. Examples are given (solution of the three-dimensional Laplace equation on a stretched computational mesh; the quasi- conservative small disturbance potential equation for transonic flow), and computation times compared for various AF schemes.
