A review on Distributed Operating Systems (DOS) for computer control is presented, based on 94 publications which appeared in the period 1974- 1985. According to the author's definition, DOS are capable of performing any of the following: - distributed (decentralized) control of local resources, - local (centralized) control of a distributed resources, - distributed control of a distributed resource. The review is built around the following requirements imposed on DOS for real-time control; fault tolerance, elasticity, expandability, possibility for improving the technical characteristics, relocatability, and virtuality.
