This paper serves to delineate trends in mathematical modeling over a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines, and it provides an introduction to papers in the volume in which it is published. The emerging patterns represent a shift from merely providing improved techniques for well established paradigms. There is a new emphasis on exceptional problem conditions such as nonlinearity, nonequilibrium, chaos, and turbulence in dynamic systems. More powerful computers now allow these more comprehensive and complex problems to be broached. Indeed, complexity itself is a common issue which is being struggled with in diverse disciplines. The question is even posed in this paper as to whether the complexity issue can even be handled within the present paradigms of physical science. Perhaps, we are overdue for a new scientific revolution. This paper is well written and very interesting. It is not hard to read, and the reviewer recommends it for any scientist interested in following current methodological trends.
