The author shows that a theorem of \textit{W. E. Roth} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 3, 392-396 (1952; Zbl 0047.019)] implies that the matrix equation \(X- AXB=C\) (where A, B and C are matrices of suitable dimensions over any field F) has a solution if and only if there exist invertible matrices S and R over F such that \[ S\left[ \begin{matrix} A+zI\\ 0\end{matrix} \begin{matrix} C\\ zB+I\end{matrix} \right]R=\left[ \begin{matrix} A+zI\\ 0\end{matrix} \begin{matrix} 0\\ zB+I\end{matrix} \right]. \] The author adds in a note that \textit{Yusun Tong} [Chin. Ann. Math., Ser. A 7, 325-337 (1986; Zbl 0594.47015)] has also given a consistency condition for this equation.
