Let V be an l-dimensional real Euclidean space. For each nonzero vector \(r\in V\), let \(\tau_ r\) be the reflection in the hyperplane \(<r>^{\perp}\). Let \(\Phi\) be a root system in V, and \(W=W(\Phi)\) the Weyl group of \(\Phi\) generated by the reflections \(\tau_ r\), \(r\in \Phi\). Let \(W^+=W^+(\Phi)\) be the group which consists of those elements of W which can be written as a product of an even number of the \(\tau_ r\). Extending the classical work of Schur on the alternating groups \textit{G. Maxwell} [ibid. 53, 440-451 (1978; Zbl 0383.20010)] has determined the Schur multipliers \(H^ 2(W^+,{\mathbb{C}}^*)\) of \(W^+\) in all cases; this being a first step in the study of projective representations of \(W^+\). The study of such representations of \(W^+\) is motivated by a special interest attached to these representations in connection with mathematical crystallography. It is therefore important to determine the \(\alpha\)-regular classes for each element [\(\alpha\) ] of the Schur multiplier, that is, those classes on which the projective characters of \(W^+\) with factor set \(\alpha\) take nonzero values.
