A function g: \(W\to Z\) is nonalternating if \(g^{-1}(C)\) is connected whenever C is connected. One main result is the following: let \(f: X\times Y\to Z\) be such that all Y-sections are nonalternating and the family of all X-sections form a separable subspace of the Baire 1 functions from Y to Z. If \(X=R\) and Y and Z are separable metric spaces, then f is of Baire class one.
