    The authors extend results of a previous paper of [Invent. Math. 82, 543- 556 (1985; Zbl 0626.42009)] to averages of the form \[ (M_{\epsilon}f)(x)=\int_{S_{\epsilon,x}}f(x+\epsilon y)\psi (x)d\sigma_{\epsilon,x}(y), \] where \(\psi \in C_ 0^{\infty}(R^ n)\), \(d\sigma_{\epsilon,x}\) denotes the induced Lebesgue measure on the surface \(S_{\epsilon,x}\) and (roughly) the \((n+1)\)-parameter family of surfaces \(S_{\epsilon,x}\) is such that as \(\epsilon\) \(\to 0\) the surfaces tend to a smooth imbedded surface \(S_{0,x}\) which has the property that its Gaussian curvature does not vanish of infinite order. It is shown that, if \(n\geq 6\), there is an \(\epsilon_ 0>0\) and \(p_ 0<\infty\) such that if \(p_ 0<p\leq \infty\), \[ \| \sup_{0<\epsilon \leq \epsilon_ 0}(M_{\epsilon}f)(x)\|_{L^ p(R^ n)}\leq C_ p\| f\|_{L^ p(R^ n)}. \]
