A method is described in order to construct a decomposable, non strongly decomposable operator on a Banach space. The method is then used to give an example of such an operator on a Hilbert space. The latter answers a question raised by Radjabalipour. An operator T on a Banach space X is called decomposable if for every finite open cover \(\{U_ 1,...,U_ n\}\) of its spectrum \(\sigma\) (T) there are closed invariant subspaces \(X_ 1,...,X_ n\) of T such that \[ X=X_ 1+...+X_ n,\quad \sigma (T_{| X_ i})\subset U_ i,\quad 1\leq i\leq n. \] The operator T is called strongly decomposable if in addition \(T_{| Y}\) is a decomposable operator for every spectral maximal space Y of T. Along the proofs the author uses exact sequences (of Banach spaces) techniques.
