The author deals with functional calculi for strongly continuous one- parameter groups and cosine functions of bounded linear operators on a Banach space X. Among the many results given we informally state two, to illustrate the flavor of the paper. Let \(\omega\) :\({\mathbb{R}}\to {\mathbb{R}}\) be locally bounded and satisfy \(1=\omega (0)\leq \omega (t+s)\leq \omega (t)\omega (s)\) for all real s,t. Let \({\mathbb{M}}^{\omega}\) be the set of Fourier transforms of (signed) measures \(\mu\) on \({\mathbb{R}}\) such that \(\int_{{\mathbb{R}}}\omega (t)d| \mu | (t)<\infty\). For T a closed densely defined operator, \(T\in [{\mathbb{M}}^{\omega}]\) means that there is a homomorphism \(\Phi_ T:{\mathbb{M}}^{\omega}\to {\mathcal B}(X)\) which describes a functional calculus for T. Theorem: For T a closed, densely defined operator on \(X,T\in [{\mathbb{M}}^{\omega}]\) if and only if T is the generator of a strongly continuous group U satisfying \(\| U(t)\| \leq K\omega (t)\) for some constant K and all real t. Theorem: Let T be the generator of a strongly continuous group U satisfying \[ \int^{\infty}_{-\infty}(1+t^ 2)^{-1}\log (\| U(t)\|)dt<\infty; \] then the spectral mapping theorem \(\sigma (U(t))=\overline{\exp (\sigma (T))}\) holds.
