The multibody contact problem is solved by the penalty finite element method in which the noninterference conditions are defined as a penalty term. The static condensation is applied in the calculation. Using the recurrent regularities mentioned in the paper one can directly obtain the governing equation for any body-contact system, and it is easy to develop a computer program. Because the iterative procedure is only related to the node displacements and not to the node forces, the computing time is reduced accordingly. The load distribution in the roller bearing is calculated and the calculated result agrees well with the test. Further, the method is used in the optimization of a multibody contact system with roller bearing.
