The authors investigate the instability and fractionation of an axisymmetric jet consisting of a fluid core and coaxial layer of an immiscible fluid which is flowing into an unperturbed ideal gas. It is assumed that the transverse velocity component of the fluid is much less than the longitudinal component. Furthermore the effects of mass and viscosity forces are neglected. By means of a linearization of the equations and considering their solutions in the form of normal modes the authors get a typical dispersion relationship. The results are discussed in relation to the given results of the literature. To investigate nonlinear effects concerned with the formation of satellite droplets the authors use the method of expansion of perturbations of the principal flow and they get a system of ordinary first-order differential equations. The given numerical results are discussed and compared with experimental results.
