It is shown that the local system of homotopy groups coming from a one- parameter topologically trivial family of smooth complex varieties underlies a good variation of mixed Hodge structure in the sense of \textit{J. Steenbrink} and \textit{S. Zucker} [Invent. Math. 80, 489-542 (1985; Zbl 0626.14007)], if the action of the local monodromy on the complex cohomology of the generic fiber is supposed to be unipotent. In particular there exists a limit mixed Hodge structure on the homotopy which is compatible with the one associated to the degenerating fiber of the family. Heavy use is made of the technique of introducing canonical mixed Hodge structures on the rational homotopy invariants of homotopy fibers of algebraic maps, developed in part I of this paper [K-Theory 1, 271-324 (1987; Zbl 0637.55006)].
