Let \(P:a=x_ 0<x_ 1<...<x_ n=b\) be an arbitrary mesh on the interval [a,b], let \(h>0\) and let s(x,h) be a real function whose restriction \(s_ i\) to \([x_{i-1},x_ i]\) is a polynomial of degree 3 or less, \(i=1,...,n\). The function s defines a discrete cubic spline if \((s_{j+1}-s_ j)(x_ i+jh)=0\), \(j=-1,0,1\); \(i=1,2,...,n-1\). The paper is concerned with existence, uniqueness and convergence properties of a discrete cubic spline interpolant taking prescribed values at the points of the mesh P. The results obtained by the authors extends some results of \textit{T. Lyche}, [BIT 16, 281-290 (1976; Zbl 0346.65002)] and \textit{A. P. Dikshit} and \textit{P. Powar} [Numer. Math. 40(1982), 71-78; Zbl 0479.65009)].
