Let L be an ample line bundle on a complex projective smooth surface S. The \(\Delta\)-genus of (S,L) is defined by \(\Delta (S,L)=2+d-h^ 0(S,L)\), where \(d=L^ 2\). The author studies such a pair with \(\Delta (S,L)=2\), assuming that \(| L|\) contains a smooth member C. By a result of the reviewer, this assumption is satisfied if \(d>1\) and \(| L|\) has no fixed component. It is known that the genus \(g(C)\geq 1\), and equality holds iff (S,L) is a scroll over an elliptic curve. So we assume \(g(C)\geq 2\). In case \(d\geq 5\), the author gets the same classification as in the classical case where L is assumed to be very ample. A complete classification of the case \(d=4\) is obtained. In case \(d\leq 3\), the author assumes \(h^ 1(C,L_ C)=0\) in addition and describes precisely the structure of (S,L) such that S is not ruled. [Reviewer's remark: There is a classification theory of ruled polarized surfaces of any given sectional genus. Since \(h^ 1(C,L_ C)=0\) implies \(g\leq \Delta\), these results altogether complete the classification of (S,L) such that \(\Delta =2\) and \(h^ 1(C,L_ C)=0.]\)
