Structure theorems are proved for certain types of pseudo-product graded Lie algebras. Let \({\mathfrak g}=\oplus {\mathfrak g}_ p\) be a \({\mathbb{Z}}\)-graded Lie algebra over \({\mathbb{R}}\) or \({\mathbb{C}}\); here p runs over \({\mathbb{Z}}\), and the \({\mathfrak g}_ p\) are finite-dimensional. Assume that the sum of all \({\mathfrak g}_ p\) for \(p<0\) is finite-dimensional too, and generated by \({\mathfrak g}_{-1}\); assume that the centralizer of \({\mathfrak g}_{-1}\) in \({\mathfrak g}_ p\), for any \(p\geq 0\), is trivial. Then \({\mathfrak g}\) is called a transitive \({\mathbb{Z}}\)-graded Lie algebra, and the first result of the paper is a characterization of all such finite-dimensional algebras over \({\mathbb{C}}\) which are semisimple. Now make two further assumptions: the centralizer of \({\mathfrak g}_{-1}\) in \({\mathfrak g}_{-1}\) is trivial, and \({\mathfrak g}_{-1}\) is the direct sum of two abelian subalgebras, on which \({\mathfrak g}_ 0\) acts irreducibly by the adjoint representation. The main result of the paper, concerning these pseudo-product graded Lie algebras (over \({\mathbb{R}}\) or \({\mathbb{C}})\), is the following: if dim \({\mathfrak g}_ 2\geq 1\), then \({\mathfrak g}\) is a simple Lie algebra.
