Let G be a finite group and let W be an Abelian subgroup of G with \(W=W_ 1\times W_ 2\) where \(W_ 1\) and \(W_ 2\) are proper subgroups of W with coprime orders. By definition, W is said to be a self- normalizing abelian subgroup of G with respect to the subgroups \(W_ 1\) and \(W_ 2\) if \(W=N_ G(A)\) for every non-empty subset A of \(V=W-(W_ 1\cup W_ 2)\). In that case, \(V=W-(W_ 1\cup W_ 2)\) is a T.I.-set in G. Also in that situation, let Ch(G) (resp. Ch(W)) denote the Z-module of generalized characters of G (resp. W) and let \(M(V)=\{\alpha \in Ch(W)|\) \(\alpha (W_ 1\cup W_ 2)=\{0\}\}\), so that then M(V) is a direct summand of Ch(W) and character induction affords an isometry from M(V) into Ch(G). This situation with \(| G|\) odd and W cyclic played an important role in Feit and Thompson's proof of the solvability of groups of odd order and they used a careful study of the field of character values and its Galois group to study it. Using Suzuki's original methods of exceptional character theory, the following result (that includes a key result of Feit and Thompson) is proved in this paper (see the ``Note added in proof'' on p. 297): Theorem. Let G be a finite group with an Abelian subgroup W that is self- normalizing with respect to the subgroups \(W_ 1\) and \(W_ 2\) and such that if \(| W_ 1|\) or \(| W_ 2| =4\), then W is cyclic and \(| W| =4p\) where p is a prime. Then the isometry from M(V) into Ch(G) afforded by character induction can be extended to a Z-linear isometry t: Ch(W)\(\to Ch(G)\) such that for all \(v\in V\) and all \(\alpha\in Ch(W)\), \(\alpha^ t(v)=\alpha (v)\) and such that any irreducible character of G not in the image of t vanishes on V.
