A Kuga fiber variety f: \(A\to V\) is an abelian scheme parametrized by an arithmetic variety and constructed from a symplectic representation of an algebraic group. The zeta function of A is then the product of L- functions associated to the sheaves \(R^ bf_*{\mathbb{Q}}_{\ell}\) on V. In an earlier paper [``Zeta functions of Kuga fiber varieties'', Duke Math. J. 57, No. 1, 333-345 (1988; Zbl 0666.14005)] the author showed how absolute Hodge cycles induce relations between the zeta functions of two Kuga fiber varieties over the same base; however these relations were valid only over some undetermined extension of the field of definition. In this paper, the fields of definition of the Hodge cycles are investigated, and it is shown that the relations between the zeta functions hold over the fields of definition of the canonical models. Let \(f_ i:\) \(A_ i\to V\) \((i=1,2)\) be canonical models of two Kuga fiber varieties, defined by symplectic representations \(\rho_ i: G\to Sp(F_ i,\beta_ i)\) which satisfy the \(H_ 2\)-condition. For a positive integer b write \(\bigwedge^{b}F_ i =\oplus F^ b_{i,\alpha} \), with each \(F^ b_{i,\alpha}\) a \(G\)-submodule of \(\bigwedge^{b}F_ i \). Then there are subsheaves \({\mathcal F}^ b_{i,\alpha}\) of \(R^ bf_{i*}{\mathbb{Q}}_{\ell}\) such that \(R^ bf_{i*}{\mathbb{Q}}_{\ell}=\oplus_{\alpha}{\mathcal F}^ b_{i,\alpha} \), and for any geometric point P of V we have (\({\mathcal F}^ b_{i,\alpha})_ P=F^ b_{i,\alpha}\otimes {\mathbb{Q}}_{\ell} \). If \(F^ b_{1,\alpha}\) and \(F^{b'}_{2,\alpha '}\) are isomorphic G-modules for some \(\alpha\),\(\alpha\) ',b,b', then \({\mathcal F}^ b_{1,\alpha}\) and \({\mathcal F}^{b'}_{2,\alpha '}((b'-b))\) are isomorphic \(\ell\)-adic sheaves on V.
