This paper studies the local classification problem for \(C^ 1\) contractions of an interval [0,a]. \textit{S. Sternberg} [Duke Math. J. 24, 97-102 (1957; Zbl 0077.062)] studied this problem when the derivative at the fixed point is not one. The case for contractions which have derivative one was started by \textit{F. Takens} in [Ann. Inst. Fourier 23, No.2, 163-195 (1973; Zbl 0266.34046)]. In that work Takens considered \(C^{\infty}\) contractions not infinitely tangent to the identity at the origin. The contractions of [0,a] which are considered are local \(C^ 1\) diffeomorphisms f: [0,a]\(\to R\) fixing the origin for which \(0<f(x)<x\) for any \(x\in (0,a]\). The contact order of these diffeomorphisms with the identity is the crucial concept. Such a contraction of class \(C^ r\) has contact order s \((0\leq s<r)\) with the identity at the origin if their s- jets agree but their \(s+1\)-jets do not. Let \(C^ r_ s([0,a])\) be the space of such contractions with the uniform \(C^ r\) topology. The major theorem states that maps in \(C^ r_ s([0,a])\) are conjugate with \(C^ r\) diffeomorphisms. In fact, if h is a \(C^ 1\) conjugation between \(f,g\in C^ r_ s([0,a])\), then it is shown that h is \(C^ r\) and \(h'(0)=[f^{(s+1)}(0)/g^{(s+1)}(0)]^{1/s}.\)
