Let \({\mathcal U}\) be the adele ring of a global field of characteristic p. The Peterson conjecture states that if \(\pi =\otimes_{v}\pi_ v \) is an irreducible unitary representation of \(G\ell (2,{\mathcal U})\) in the space of \({\mathbb{C}}\)-valued parabolic forms, then the \(\pi_ v\) `are not contained in the complementary series'. More than ten years ago the author of the present paper announced a proof of this conjecture in a one page note; here the details of the proof are given. This paper is part of a bigger project which has a proof of the Langlands conjectures at its aim.
