Asymptotics for orthogonal polynomials on and off the essential spectrum (Q1114103)

A conjecture of \textit{A. Máté}, \textit{S. Nevai} and \textit{V. Totik} [Constructive Approximation 1, 231-248 (1985; Zbl 0585.42023)] is settled in the paper showing that the asymptotic behavior of the orthogonal polynomials on the essential spectrum is closely related to the asymptotic behavior in the complex plane off the essential spectrum. Two independent proofs of the conjecture are constructed. Both the proofs given are interesting.
