A control problem for the wave equation is considered. The control is executed on a part of the boundary through the coefficient in the homogeneous absorbing condition. The cost functional corresponds to minimization of the system energy at the final time. It is shown that the cost functional is a Gâteaux differentiable function of the control and the form of the Gâteaux derivative is derived. The proof is based on a general result on differentiability of a mini-max with respect to a parameter.
