A matrix method is presented for the solution of elastic wave propagation problems in multilayered isotropic solids containing imperfectly welded interfaces. Two models of the interface are used. In one, the interfacial traction is assumed to be proportional to the displacement jump across the interface. In the second, a thin layer of adhesive material is assumed to be present at the interface. The method is applied to derive the dispersion equation for guided waves in multilayered plates and half spaces. The method is shown to be free from the well known numerical instability at high frequencies. Numerical results for specific cases will be presented in a forthcoming paper.
