A new dimension function d(X) is defined which is a transfinite extension of covering dimension. This is related to the D-dimension of \textit{D. Henderson} [Pac. J. Math. 26, 91-107, 109-113 (1968; Zbl 0162.269f)]. The definition is too long for this short review, but some of the properties are as follows. If X is \(T_ 4\) and one of d(X) or dim(X) is finite, then \(d(X)=\dim (X)\). If X is \(T_ 4\), then d(X)\(\leq D(X)\). If X is metrizable, then \(d(X)=D(X)\). For a metric compact space dim(X)\(\leq d(X)\). If X is a strongly hereditarily normal space and \(Y\subset X\), then d(Y)\(\leq d(X)\). If X is \(T_ 4\) and the locally finite union of closed subsets \(\{C_{\alpha}\}_{\alpha \in A}\) with \(d(C_{\alpha})\leq \beta\) for each \(\alpha\in A\), then d(X)\(\leq \beta\). There are also some product theorems.
