    Given a function f: \(X\times Y\to Z\) and a relation R: \(X\times Y\to \{0,1\}\) the athor studies their extensions f, R, \(\hat R\) to the fuzzy subsets of \(L^ X\), \(L^ Y\), \(L^ Z\), defined as follows: \[ f(A,B)(z)=\sup \{A(x)\wedge B(y)| \quad f(x,y)=z,\quad x\in X,\quad y\in Y\},\quad z\in Z, \] \[ \hat R(A,B)\Leftrightarrow (\forall a\in X \exists b\in Y R(a,b)\quad \&\quad B(b)\geq A(a))\quad \&\quad (\forall b\in Y \exists a\in X R(a,b)\quad \&\quad A(a)\geq B(b)), \] \[ R(A,B)\Leftrightarrow (\forall a\in X \sup \{B(b)| \quad R(a,b),\quad b\in Y\}\geq A(a))\quad \&\quad (\forall b\in Y \sup \{A(a)| \quad R(a,b),\quad a\in X\}\geq B(b)), \] for every \(A\in L^ X\) and \(B\in L^ Y\). The general properties of the extensions f, \(\hat R\) and R can be sharpened in the case when X, Y, Z are topological spaces. Then it is shown that the extensions of the operations \(\wedge\), \(\vee\) and of the partial order \(\leq\) of a lattice share the fundamental properties of the corresonding classic concepts if one restricts to a certain class of fuzzy subsets of E which are similar to the convex sublattices of E. An application is given to possibilistic sets; this is a class of fuzzy sets introduced in this paper in analogy to random sets.
